Door gone from WUJC; lesbian & gay comics on cable
by John DuAne Graves Tune in to WRUW 91.1 FM on Fridays at 11:30 am for extended lesbian, gay, bisexual and women's programming. Former GayWaves staffer Josette's show, Allergic to the Mainstream, has moved from Monday to a new timeslot: Friday from noon to 2 pm, right after GayWaves. Allergic to the Mainstream features news, commentary and music by and about women.
Unfortunately, Hold That Door, the pioneering lesbian, gay and bisexual show on WUJC 88.7 FM last year, will not be on the air this fall. John Horner, the show's host says that WUJC's management, which has been very supportive of the show, received a lot of pressure to eliminate the show last year from conservative elements in John Carroll's religious community. WUJC station management successfully resisted the opposition last year but, because he has graduated and his student status has changed, they are unable to get him on the air again. Call WUJC at 397-4438 and let the management know you support the show and want it back on the air. A gay show could be aired on WUJC if à qualified, current John Carroll student would take the initiative. If you want to be that person, let the station know.
Stand up comics Margaret Cho and Bobby Collins have their own special airing on the Showtime channel. Margaret Cho, in an interview in a recent edition of the Advocate, said she loves women but complained that, so far, women groupies have not swarmed over her after performances.

Amanda Bearse, the actress who plays Marcy, the Bundy's next door neighbor on the Fox network sitcom Married... With Children, has come out of the closet in a feature story in the September 21st edition of the Advocate. Bearse, who at one time was comic-actor Sandra Bernhard's lover, was outed in the tabloids a few years ago. Bearse is raising an adopted daughter with TV ad producer Amy Shomer, her lover of 31⁄2 years. Bearse has received a lot of support from the cast and producers of the program and indicated that her contract had just been renewed, at a time when she could have been let go for coming out of the closet.
This fall preview edition of the Advocate also featured interviews with recently out of the closet rock star Melissa Etheridge, screenwriter Ron Nyswaner, playwright Jonathan Tolins and African American author Jewelle Gomez.
Lesbian and gay comics have been performing on the VH-1 channel's Stand Up Spotlight and the Comedy Central channel's Stand Up Stand Up and Two Drink Minimum programs. Comedy Central will air a stand up comedy special this fall featuring all lesbian and gay comics.
The film version of Randy Shilt's AIDS epic And the Band Played On, starring Matthew Modine, with appearances by Sir Ian McKellen, Lily Tomlin, Alan Alda, Phil Collins, Richard Gere, Anjelica Huston, and Steve Martin, is playing on HBO. USA Today reports that And the Band Played

British gay actor Jaye Davidson stars in the Academy Award winning film The Crying Game which has been playing on a payper-view channel.
Jim McGrattan and Dave Haskell, GayWaves correspondents in the field, report that Matt's character has been appearing regularly on Melrose Place this season, reportedly because the actors demanded it. They tell me it's been reported that Matt may finally get a gay lover on the show later this season.
The September 10th edition of Entertainment Weekly ran a feature article on the history of the production of And the Band Played On; a review of Ang Lee's The Wedding Banquet, a film about a wedding of convenience arranged to please the parents of an Asian American gay man; an article on the history of Hollywood's portrayals of gays in the military; and a report on the GLAAD and ACT UP protest of Mel Gibson over reports he made rude comments about gays and abortion.
Elise, another correspondent, reveals that the August 21st edition of Billboard magazine reviewed Over My Heart, a new album by Laura Brannigan. An "Ode to Lesbian Love" sung in Spanish is one of the songs on the album which were mentioned in the review.
The hit play Angels in America, which donated $1 from every ticket sale to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, has raised $133,000.
Sharon Bottoms and her lover, April Wade, are profiled in the September 27th edition of People magazine. Bottoms lost parental custody of her son to her mother in a bigoted Virginia courtroom because she is a lesbian. USA Today has also run a number of articles about the Bottoms case. Thanks to John Everett for his strong support of gay civil rights in his column, "Everett's Elements," in the September 16 edition of the Call and Post. Everett called the judge's ruling "immoral" and a threat to everyone's civil rights. The Call and Post also reports on an announcement. by Pat Robertson's Christian Coalition that the predominantly white anti-gay group would begin a national campaign to recruit more African Amer-
ican and Hispanic members. The Call and Post also reported that most African American political observers have expressed doubt over the group's success in the minority communities.
Followers of the comic strip Doonesbury may have noticed that Andy Lippincott, the gay character who died of AIDS complications a couple of years ago, reappeared in a dream to radio talk show host Mark. Andy tells Mark that he is there to help him come out of the closet. Mark's coming out story has been continuing in the comic strip over the last few weeks.
Raymond Luczak has appeared at Borders Book Shop in Beachwood and at Waldenbooks in the Arcade to autograph Eyes of Desire, his new book about hearing impaired lesbians and gays. Eyes of Desire, the first book about the hearing impaired lesbian and gay community, is filled with essays, interviews and short stories. Jim and Dave spoke with Luczak who indicated that the Buckeye Rainbow Society of the Deaf, which has been inactive of late, may become more active. The Rainbow Society, for hearing impaired lesbians, gays and bisexuals, may be contacted by writing to P.O. Box 6253, Cleveland, OH 44101.
Also new in print is The Corporate Closet, James Woods' new study of gays in the workplace. Woods believes that the workplace will be the new frontier of gay activism. His study gives an indication about how the new activism will impact all lesbians, gays and bisexuals in the workforce.
Ask for these books at any of our community's book stores listed in the Resource Directory. Jim and Dave report that Waldenbooks in the Arcade has an expanded section of lesbian, gay and bisexual books and had a special window display honoring Pride month this past June.
Finally, don't forget, the first show of the new season of In the Life, the national gay variety show, will air Sunday, October 17 on WVIZ, Channel 25, hosted by lesbian comic Lea DeLaria. This month's show will feature film clips from Gay Pride celebrations around the country. If you appreciate WVIZ carrying In the Life, make a donation when the show is aired during the next Channel 25 membership drive. ♡ John DuAne Graves is a coproducer of GayWaves, on WRUW 91,1 FM.
